Mohammad Anwar Elahee, who holds the distinction of being the only man to qualify Mauritius for the African Nations Cup finals, has died.
The former national coach passed away on Friday, aged 81, after a short illness.
Elahee's legendary status in Mauritius was born out of taking the Indian Ocean islanders to the 1974 finals in Egypt.
In 1985, working alongside German coach Helmut Kosmehl, he led the national team to the Indian Ocean Games title.
As a player, the defender was once described by a British journalist as being "as safe as the Bank of England".
He was awarded a special medal for his services to football by the then Fifa president Joao Havelange in 1975.
His son Anwar Elahee Jr is the vice-president of the Mauritius FA.
"I've not only lost a perfect father but a whole lot more," he told BBC Sport on Friday.
"He will be missed as a big patriot who always put the interest of the country first."
