Instructions on using the search form properly are given below.
Search Form Instructions
The search form for the SkyscraperPage Diagrams is a powerful tool for querying and displaying buildings. These instructions describe each part of the search form so that it can be used to it's full capability.
By Name
These five fields give the ability to search for buildings by name, city, country, etc. For example, type "madrid" into the City field to search for buildings in Madrid, Spain. Type "madrid, frankfurt" (notice the comma) to search for both cities together.
A search term can be excluded from the results by appending a hyphen, or minus sign, to it. For example, to see a diagram of the tallest buildings in the United States outside of New York and Chicago, enter "-new york, -chicago" into the City field and "united states" into the Country field.
The Building field searches all known names for a building/structure as well as street addresses. The Illustrator field searches the names of illustrators who do the drawings.
Structure Type
This section enables you to search for different types of structures by their main structural-type. The list can be expanded by clicking the "more" link.
Status
This section enables you to search for structures of different construction status.
| | • | Built - Structure currently exists. Construction is complete and structure has potential for use. Structures undergoing renovation remain in this category. |
| | | • | Under Construction - Structure is currently under-construction. Structural components are being assembled permanently on-site. Excavation does not count as construction. |
| | | | | • | On Hold - Construction had begun at one point but has now stopped. This is a sub-category of Under-construction. |
| | | • | Proposed - Structure is planned to be built and construction has not yet begun. Includes both structures which have been approved by local authorities and those which have not (we do not have a distinct 'approved' category). |
| | | | | • | Stale Proposal - The last news we have heard is that the structure was proposed but we have not heard any status updates for two years. After no news for five years a structure can be set as cancelled. This is a sub-category of Proposed which we use so that proposals which drop from the news because they are most likely cancelled do not continue appearing in the standard diagrams. |
| | | • | Cancelled - Structure was at one proposed but has been cancelled by it's developer. |
| | | • | Destroyed - Structure at one time existed but no longer does. Includes structures which have been demolished, dismantled, imploded, destroyed in a terrorist act, destroyed by accident, etc. |
| | | • | Vision - Structure's design is intended as an architectural vision only and is not to be built in it's current form. A creation of an architect or other professional designer. Vision structures do not get cancelled like proposed structures can. |
| | | • | Fantasy - Structure is either a creation of our illustrators or is from a popular culture franchise (ie. the Stark Tower from the Ironman movies). The designs are not indented to be built in real life. |

Order-By
These options control the order in which buildings are displayed. For example, you can order buildings by height, by their construction date, by number of floors or several other ways.
To specify a way to order the results by (ex. Pinnacle Height), click the column highlighted in blue. You can specify up to three order-by options. If you select Year Built as the first method, you can then select Pinnacle as the second method. Buildings will then be grouped together by the year they were built, and buildings of the same year will also be ordered by height.
The up and down arrows signify Ascending and Descending order. Building names and city, state, and country names are sorted in alphebetical order. Ascending order is from 1 to A to Z, descending order is from Z to A to 1.
Note on Official Height - Only highrise building have an official height (which is either the buildings roof height or spire height). Other types of structures can't be ordered by official height.
Heights
You can specify a minimum and a maximum height for buildings/structures. The type of building height that is used (pinnacle, official or roof) is determined by what is the first method selected (marked with "1") in the Order-By section. If a height is not selected in the Order-By section then pinnacle heights are used.
The type of measurement units can also be selected (meters or feet). The units selected here determine what units the heights entered are in, as well as controlling the units used in the diagram when it gets displayed.
Year
You can specify a minimum and a maximum year of completion for buildings/structures.
An interesting way of using this feature is to limit a city search to a certain year to see what buildings existed in the city at that time. To do this, enter a year, say 1950, in the Maximum Year field and enter the name of a city in the City field.
Drawing Selection
Use these options to select how drawings are displayed. Since some buildings have more than one drawing and some buildings have none, you can specify how you want these displayed in the diagram.
| | • | Only Drawn Structures - Only building/structure entries with a drawing will be displayed, undrawn structures will not. This gives a cleaner look to a diagram, though many structures may be excluded. | | | • | All Structures - All structures regardless of whether they have a drawing or not will be displayed. Undrawn structures will have a blank space in the diagram. | | | • | All Drawings - All drawings for each structure will be displayed. Some structures have multiple drawings done by different illustrators. |
