Fog continues to disrupt flights, trains

NEW DELHI, JAN. 6. Fog continued to play havoc with air and rail services as poor visibility today led to diversion of two flights, delay of several flights and trains, and rescheduling of three trains and cancellation of six others.

Though the night and early morning flight operations were normal, dense fog enveloped the Indira Gandhi International Airport here around 8 this morning, taking the visibility down to about 125 metres from 8-30 a.m. to 9-25 a.m. and leading to diversion of an international Kuwait Airways flight KU 381 to Ahmedabad and a domestic Air Sahara S2-122 flight to Mumbai in the intervening period.

It was only at 9-44 a.m. that the operations resumed with an international Lufthansa LH 762 flight landing by using the Instrument Landing System CAT III A. Thereafter, the domestic and international flight operations resumed without the system as the visibility improved to around 650 metres by 9-50 a.m. and 1300 metres by 10 a.m. While an Indian Airlines flight IC-688 took off for Mumbai at 9-56 a.m., a Jet Airways flight 9W 701 departed for Ahmedabad at 10-01 a.m.

Jet Airways said the fog delayed the departure of its Mumbai flight 9W 332 by three hours and 20 minutes and the flight finally took off at 10-10 a.m.

Likewise, the delay of the Chennai-Delhi 9W 822 flight was delayed by over an hour as it reached at 10-35 a.m. Jet Airways was not able to operate its Delhi-Chandigarh-Delhi flight 9W 3303/3304 due to bad weather over Chandigarh.

Train services were also adversely affected by presence of fog in and around Delhi. While Amarpali Express, Gondwana Express, A.P. Express and Mahananda Express were delayed by between 2 and 18 hours, the departure of Mahananda Express, which was delayed by 18 hours, also had to be rescheduled along with that of Sadbhavana Express which leaves for Muzaffarpur.

But it were the passengers of the six cancelled trains who had the most harrowing time. The cancelled trains were Delhi-Farukabad Kalindi Express, Ambala-Allahabad Unchahar Express, and Delhi-Sealdah Lal Quilla Express, and their return services.
