New: Sunsets Restaurant

We had lunch recently at a new restaurant in Sandy Ground, Sunsets, and it was quite nice. They are open for lunch and dinner, Sunday through Friday (11:30am to whenever) and closed on Saturday. They have music every Tuesday (The Musical Brothers) and Friday (Boss and the Horsepower Band) evening.

Specials vary on a weekly basis, both at lunch and dinner. They range from a Chicken Quesadilla or Chef's Salad at lunch to a 24oz. porterhouse steak or Lobster Thermidor for dinner. Tel: 264.498.0177

Some interesting items from the lunch menu include Lobster salad, escargot, hero sandwich, Armel's Favorite Seafood pasta and, of course, burgers etc. From the dinner menu, I would like to try Lobster Spring Rolls, the Fish Cakes, and Sunsets Special Butter Fish.

New Villa: The Bird of Paradise

There are a lot of new villas in Anguilla, but one of the best that we have visited is the newly constructed "Bird of Paradise" villa in Sandy Hill (which is now available for rent). The owners have travelled the world to gather the perfect materials and decorations for their home, which they named after the rare and exotic bird of Papua New Guinea. Here is how they describe it:

"Designed by the architectural firm that designed the Amandari in Bali, Four Seasons in Hawaii, the Atlantis in the Bahamas and Las Ventanas in Cabo San Lucas, The Bird is designed in an Asian Tropical style with meandering, lagoon style pools that weave between the four buildings to create an intimate compound lush with vegetation. A sunken verandah, outside living room with a fireplace, large sun porch, and Indonesian bale, or day bed, all increase the intimacy and warmth of this exquisite villa. Although new to the rental market, the Bird’s design, decorating, and great attention to detail are already creating a stir on the island and a lot of very favorable comment by rental agents."

"The Bird of Paradise offers four master suites with an office that can service as a 5th bedroom. Each suite has its own refrigerator and coffee service. Frette Linens, robes and slippers; Voss water, Bvlgari amenities; and Kona coffee enhance the luxury of this tropical retreat. The placement of the four suites, each with its own balcony, assures individual privacy for guests. Furniture and intricately carved stone tables, planters, and wall murals were all custom-designed and made for the owners in Bali. The villa also showcases their oceanic and African art collection gathered over the past 20 years."

"Bird of Paradise is highly secluded. It is located above Sandy Hill Bay with direct access to a long and lovely crescent beach. On a clear day one can see 6 countries. At this time of year [spring], the frolicking humpback whales are very much in presence."

4 or 5 bedrooms, 2 swimming pools, airco. For more information, contact the owners at anguillabird@yahoo.com or Jackie Pascher at Island Dreams, jackiep@anguillanet.com.

Junior Fleming STILL Needs Our Help

Donations!

March 24: Junior is Back!

Junior arrived home today. Unfortunately he needed a fusion operaton to repair the 2 herniated cervical discs. The operation replaces the damaged discs with bone from his hip and then secures the disc with a metal plate. The good news is that he is now in no pain and feels much better but the recovery period will be longer than hoped for. It will take 3 months wearing a collar and he will be off work for at least that time. It will take months to regain strength in his arm but the prognosis is hopeful. Junior expresses his deep appreciation to the outstanding and compassionate medical team in Atlanta at Piedmount hospital especially Brenda, Dr. Carl and Dr. John for their expert care. Most importantly Junior thanks all of you who have supported him in every way through this ordeal.

"We have collected approximately $10,000.00 to date, but the surgery was more extensive and therefore the costs have been more, so any further donations would be greatly appreciated. The more we can collect , the less debt Junior will have to repay!!

Thanks so much!!!

Update: Mar 17, 2006: Junior Recovering From Surgery - March 17, 2006

It has now been a week since Junior was operated on in Atlanta for two herniated discs in his neck area. The medical procedure proved to be more challenging than we had hoped but after two days in hospital he has been recuperating near Atlanta. Junior sees the doctor again early next week and if all goes well he will return to Anguilla mid week.

In the period December through March he suffered major degeneration of the muscle in his right arm as those of us who saw him on island could clearly observe. It is impossible to tell to what extent the arm will completely recover at this time as this process takes months. He must wear a soft collar for the coming weeks to support his neck.

Many have asked about the fund raising. We have to date raised what we estimate to be 50-60% of what the estimated medical expenses. In addition we have had offers to provide additional debt assistance using friends credit cards the exact amounts/terms of which are unknown at this time. We receive more each day as the word passes to other friends of Junior. Once the exact expenses are known we will be providing a summary of all expenses and payments to donors upon request.

Junior expresses his thanks for all of your kind words, prayers and financial support.

With Appreciation, Friends of Junior

Junior Fleming is well known on Anguilla by locals and visitors alike. He is the operator of the glass bottom boat on Shoal Bay East. He needs an operation to fix a problem that is preventing him from working. Please help if you can.

Junior's Website
Junior has an injury to his neck which may well prevent him from working if it isn’t treated soon. He has a problem in the C4-C5 area which is causing him a lot of nerve pain, but much worse impacting his breathing and he is loosing strength in his right arm.

The only solution to prevent further damage and hopefully enable full recovery is for Junior to have an expensive back/neck surgery in the US. Through the generous efforts of Friends of Junior we have obtained the services of a US doctor who will undertake the operation at minimum expense however the operation will still cost at least $20,000 US! Junior and his family are making every effort to raise the needed funds but we felt that you too might like to help get Junior back to Shoal Bay.

Cheques should be made payable to:
Margaret Thomas (in Trust For Junior)
Box 171
The Valley
Anguilla BWI

Donors have a right to independent audit and the funds collected will only pay medical expenses. All excess funds will be donated to the Island Harbour school.

If you are on island you may donate in person at Gwen's or Elodia's on Shoal Bay and they will be picked up. We are in the process of setting up a form for credit card charges. If you are interested in donating by means of a credit card, please contact us on this form and we will send you the information.

Like many of you Junior has provided our friends and family enjoyable snorkeling, trips to Scrub, fishing etc. We appreciate your generosity in saying thanks and good luck to Junior by providing a donation.

Dave and Margaret
