Legislation & guidelines  A new Environmental Code came into force on 1 January 1999, bringing together 15 existing central environmental laws. The aim of the Environmental Code is to promote sustainable development based on the understanding that nature is worthy of protection in its own right, and that man's right to exploit nature carries with it a responsibility. The Environmental Code is further elaborated and specified in the form of ordinances, regulations issued by public authorities and decisions taken in individual cases.
