A new Environmental Code came into force on 1 January 1999, bringing together
15 existing central environmental laws. The aim of the Environmental Code is to
promote sustainable development based on the understanding that nature is worthy
of protection in its own right, and that man's right to exploit nature carries
with it a responsibility. The Environmental Code is further elaborated and specified
in the form of ordinances, regulations issued by public authorities and decisions
taken in individual cases.
