Review of December 2006 domestic shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers

         [Digital terrestrial broadcast receivers]
A total of 1,613,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers were shipped in December. The breakdown is as follows: 1,030,000 units for digital terrestrial TVs, 18,000 units for tuners, 146,000 units for STBs, and 419,000 units for DVD recorders. The shipments increased significantly due to the expansion of the digital terrestrial broadcasting service area in December and year-end sales drives. Total shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers for 2006 reached 8,925,000 units. Cumulative sales of these devices exceeded 17 million units, reaching 17,286,000 units by the end of December 2006.

For December, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 86.9% of all color TV shipments. Classified by display type, digital terrestrial CRT sets accounted for almost 0% of CRT sets, while digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 99.9% of PDP sets and 97.1% of LCD sets, respectively. Cumulative shipments of these devices reached 10,667 units, exceeding 10 million units.

Sales of cable TV STBs exceeded 3.5 million units. DVD recorders with digital tuners accounted for 46.2% of all DVD players and 73.6% of all DVD recording/reproducing devices. Combined sales of these devices comprised 35.0% of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold for the month.

Review of July 2006 domestic shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers

[Digital terrestrial broadcast receivers]

A total of 641,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers were shipped in July. The breakdown is as follows: 385,000 for digital terrestrial TVs, 7,000 tuners, 111,000 STBs, and 139,000 DVD recorders. Sales of digital terrestrial TVs, tuners, cable TV STBs and DVD recorders grew 54.9 percent, 17.7 percent, 9.6 percent, and 120.3 percent, respectively, from the same month last year. Cumulative sales of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers reached 12,544,000 units by the end of July 2006, exceeding 12 million units.

[Digital terrestrial TVs]

For July, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 64.7 percent of all color TV shipments. Classified by display type, digital terrestrial CRT sets accounted for 0.9 percent of CRT sets, while digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 99.5 percent of PDP sets and 83.4 percent of LCD sets, respectively.

[Other digital terrestrial broadcast reception devices]

Sales of STBs and DVD recorders remained steady. DVD recorders with digital tuners accounted for 31.7 percent of all DVD players and 56.3 percent of all DVD recording/playback devices. The combined sales of these devices accounted for 38.9 percent of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold during the month. In addition, JEITA began to compile statistics on personal computers and One-Seg compatible cellular phones. Their figures represent the cumulative total of these devices shipped as of June 2006.

Review of August 2006 domestic shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers

[Digital terrestrial broadcast receivers]

A total of 579,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers were shipped in August. The breakdown is as follows: 372,000 digital terrestrial TVs, 4,000 tuners, 104,000 STBs, and 99,000 DVD recorders. Sales of digital terrestrial TVs, cable TV STBs and DVD recorders grew 74.0 percent, 15.2 percent, and 210.4 percent, respectively, while sales of tuners fell by 52.9 percent, from the same month last year. Cumulative sales of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers reached 13,123,000 units by the end of August 2006, exceeding 13 million units.

For August, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 66.9 percent of all color TV shipments. Classified by display type, digital terrestrial CRT sets accounted for 0.4 percent of CRT sets, while digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 99.6 percent of PDP sets and 86.9 percent of LCD sets, respectively.

Sales of cable TV STBs remained steady. With demand generated by the World Cup abating, DVD recorders with digital tuners accounted for 25.7 percent of all DVD players and 49.9 percent of all DVD recording/playback devices. The combined sales of these devices accounted for 35.0 percent of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold during the month.

Review of September 2006 domestic shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers

[Digital terrestrial broadcast receivers]

A total of 739,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers were shipped in September. The breakdown is as follows: 466,000 digital terrestrial TVs, 7,000 tuners, 124,000 STBs, and 142,000 DVD recorders. Sales of digital terrestrial TVs, tuners, cable TV STBs and DVD recorders grew 86.4 percent, 23.5 percent, 24.1 percent, and 259.7 percent, respectively, from the same month last year. Cumulative sales of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers reached 13,862,000 units by the end of September 2006.

For September, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 70.7 percent of all color TV shipments. Classified by display type, digital terrestrial CRT sets accounted for approximately 0 percent of CRT sets, while digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 99.0 percent of PDP sets and 87.8 percent of LCD sets, respectively.

Sales of cable TV STBs remained steady. DVD recorders with digital tuners accounted for 32.5 percent of all DVD players and 56.3 percent of all DVD recording/playback devices. The combined sales of these devices accounted for 35.9 percent of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold during the month.

A total of 609,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers of various forms were shipped in April.
The breakdown is as follows: 358,000 digital terrestrial TVs, 5,000 tuners, 113,000 cable TV STBs, and 134,000 DVD recorders. Sales of digital terrestrial TVs, tuners, cable TV STBs, and DVD recorders grew 66.9 percent, 4.6 percent, 49.8 percent, and 828.0 percent, respectively, from the same month last year. Cumulative sales of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers reached 10,489,000 units by the end of April 2006, exceeding 10 million units within two years and five months of the launch of digital terrestrial broadcasting services.

For April, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 56.0 percent of all color TV shipments. Classified by display type, digital terrestrial CRT sets accounted for 1.5 percent of CRT sets, while digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 99.9 percent of PDP sets and 73.8 percent of LCD sets, respectively.

Sales of cable TV STBs and DVD recorders for digital terrestrial broadcast reception increased steadily from the same month last year.
DVD recorders with digital tuners accounted for 27.6 percent of all DVD players (and 44.5 percent of all DVD recording/playback devices. Their combined sales accounted for 40.4 percent of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold during the month.

Review of May 2006 domestic shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers

A total of 683,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers of various forms was shipped in May.
The breakdown is as follows: 391,000 digital terrestrial TVs, 7,000 tuners, 111,000 cable TV STBs, and 173,000 DVD recorders. Sales of digital terrestrial TVs, tuners, cable TV STBs, and DVD recorders grew 115.6 percent, 70.0 percent, 15.8 percent, and 959.3 percent, respectively, from the same month last year. Due to an increase in the number of models and with the FIFA World Cup Soccer broadcasts approaching, sales of DVD recorders in particular grew. Cumulative sales of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers reached 11.1 million (11,172,000) units by the end of May 2006.

Their combined sales accounted for 41.6 percent of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold during the month.

Review of June 2006 domestic shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers

A total of 731,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers of various forms was shipped in June.
The breakdown is as follows: 448,000 digital terrestrial TVs, 8,000 tuners, 117,000 cable TV STBs, and 157,000 DVD recorders. Sales of digital terrestrial TVs, tuners, cable TV STBs, and DVD recorders grew 85.0 percent, 75.8 percent, 10.0 percent, and 489.1 percent, respectively, from the same month last year. Due in part to the FIFA World Cup Soccer broadcasts and the arrival of summer bonus season, sales of PDP sets and LCD sets of 30 inches or larger grew from the previous month. Cumulative sales of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers reached 11.9 million (11,902,000) units by the end of June 2006.

For June, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 67.8 percent of all color TV shipments. Classified by display type, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 1.1 percent of CRT sets and 99.7 percent of PDP sets, respectively, while digital terrestrial LCD sets accounted for 81.6 percent of LCD sets, exceeding 80 percent for the first time.

Sales of cable TV STBs remained steady. While DVD recorders with digital tuners accounted for 35.6 percent of all DVD players, they accounted for 59.9 percent of all DVD recording/playback devices, exceeding 50 percent for two consecutive months. Their combined sales accounted for 37.6 percent of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold durwing the month.

    A total of 671,000 digital terrestrial broadcast receivers were shipped in March. The breakdown is as follows: 395,000 units for digital terrestrial TVs, 8,000 units for tuners, 137,000 units for cable TV STBs, and 131,000 units for DVD recorders. The sales of digital terrestrial TVs, tuners and cable TV STBs grew 95.5%, 89.6% and 73.7%, respectively, over the same month last year. The total shipments of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers in FY 2005 were 5,854,000 units, showing a drastic increase of 98.2% over the previous year. Cumulative sales of digital terrestrial broadcast receivers reached 9,880,000 units by the end of March 2006nearing the 10 million unit mark.

    For March, digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 48.2%, and for FY 2005, they accounted for 42.3% of all color TV shipments. Classified according to display type, digital terrestrial CRT sets accounted for 1.5% of CRT sets, while digital terrestrial TVs accounted for 99.6% of PDP sets and 69.5% of LCD sets, respectively.

    Sales of Cable TV STBs and digital DVD recorders increased by 73.7% and 74.4%, respectively, from the previous month, accounting for 23.9% of those of all DVD players (and 41.8% of those of all DVD recording/reproducing devices). Their combined sales commanded a 39.9% share of all digital terrestrial broadcast receivers sold for the month.
