The road entered Marshall in 1827, making it one of the early towns situated directly on the National Road. However, it wasnt until 1835 that the town was officially organized by Col. William B. Archer. Archer was a savvy businessman and realized locating a town at the crossroads of the Vincennes and Chicago State Road (now IL Route 1) and the National Road made good financial sense. Marshall grew quickly, became the Clark County seat in 1838 and boasts one of the oldest City Bands, founded in 1875, with free concerts on the courthouse square each Friday mid-June through mid-August.
