St. Andrew

St. Andrew

St. Andrew

Feastday: November 30
Patron of Fisherman

Andrew, like his brother Simon Peter, was a fisherman. He became a disciple of the great St. John the Baptist, but when John pointed to Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" Andrew understood that Jesus was greater. At once he left John to follow the Divine Master. Jesus knew that Andrew was walking behind him, and turning back, he asked, "what do you seek?" When Andrew answered that he would like to know where Jesus lived, Our Lord replied, "Come and see." Andrew had been only a little time with Jesus when he realized that this was truly the Messiah.

From then on, he chose to follow Jesus. Andrew was thus the first disciple of Christ. Next, Andrew brought his brother Simon (St. Peter) to Jesus and Jesus received him, too, as His disciple. At first the two brothers continued to carry on their fishing trade and family affairs, but later, the Lord called them to stay with Him all the time. He promised to make them fishers of men, and this time, they left their nets for good. It is believed that after Our Lord ascended into Heaven, St. Andrew went to Greece to preach the gospel. He is said to have been put to death on a cross, to which he was tied, not nailed. He lived two days in that state of suffering, still preaching to the people who gathered around their beloved Apostle. Two countries have chosen St. Andrew as their patron - Russia and Scotland.

St. Andrew, Apostle and martyr, brother of Peter, I'm delighted that today is your feast day. Through God's calling you followed Jesus and was inspired to love Him immediately. You are truIy blessed. How foolish are those who receive scantifying grace in Baptism and lose Him in life! I too remember my trips to the Amalfi Coast in South western Italy, going up the stairs and praying at the great altar of the church dedicated to your name. I was clearly impressed that there were many foreign, negative and rival influences on the Catholic church of this region, that had to fight wars to ward off invasion. St. Andrew as you did then, please pray for the pilgrim church on earth, for divine protection. Refresh me when I'm tired, give me patience when provoked. Bless my students to produce exciting and engaging written work and debate, Grant me ingenuity in performing their tasks. Thank you dear Jesus, for the success of my yearbook publication. I dedicate this year's work to you. Mother Mary pray for all bedridden, vulnerable persons, the sick and the suffering to have the care that they need. Bless care-givers too. May they be dedicated to the ones they care for. Amen.

St Andrew to me is a great saint since he was first to recognize Jesus as the Christ. Interesting fact is he brought Peter to Christ (foundation of the Roman Catholic Church). My daily prayer to St Andrew's intercession is: St Andrew help lead our Protestant brothers and sisters to the true church. I thank him for the Anglican Bishops that renounced their protest and returned to St Peter's chair. He is the patron of many eastern churches, may they too one day recognize St Peter's authority as leader of the one holy catholic apostolic Church. St Andrew pray for us that we may be one in Christ's true church.
