Information Sessions for Students and Visitors
CSIS regularly hosts information sessions for groups located in or visiting Washington, D.C. Sessions are tailored to the experience and interests of the participants, but generally include interactive discussions about foreign policy issues and the role of think tanks in the Washington, D.C. ecosystem. Students may also meet with CSIS staff for a career forum about the many entry points into the foreign policy field, and what it’s like to live as a young professional in Washington, D.C.
Foreign Policy and Leadership Seminars
The Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy works closely with educational institutions to help foster the next generation of foreign policy thinkers and to give students the skills and knowledge necessary for career success in the global arena. Our Foreign Policy and Leadership Seminars are an action-based learning experience that enables students to develop a nuanced understanding of global trends and regional issues. Students learn real-world skills required for successful careers in foreign policy and walk away with a new sense of their leadership potential.
Our customizable approach ensures programs fit the context of each student group, and meets the academic objectives of the university. To ensure active engagement throughout the program, CSIS closely coordinates the agenda with associated faculty and assigns readings and background materials to the students. This transfers some content knowledge to students prior to their arrival, and empowers them to openly ask questions and debate issues throughout the seminar.

United States Army War College International Strategic Crisis Negotiation Exercise
For over ten years, CSIS and the U.S. Army War College have partnered with universities and international relations institutions around the country to conduct an annual International Strategic Crisis Negotiation Exercise. Designed for students and young professionals involved in the study of diplomacy and international relations, the exercise is a two-day immersion in negotiation designed to allow students to learn and apply the following skills:

- Strategic Thinking
- Leadership
- Planning and Evaluation
- Decision Making
- Team Building
- Time Management

Partnership with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University
CSIS enjoys a unique partnership with the Maxwell School that focuses on developing joint programs and initiatives. The Maxwell School is renowned for being the oldest public affairs school in the country and for its top-ranked graduate program in public affairs. The partnership enables CSIS and the Maxwell School to leverage their respective academic and policy expertise and promotes joint efforts to conduct research, offer educational courses, build executive education programs, and hold conferences on key public affairs and global issues. Additionally, Maxwell staff, visiting faculty, undergraduate and graduate students are centrally located in the heart of the policymaking world. Embedded within the CSIS headquarters, students can complete part of their studies in Washington, D.C. – a critical opportunity for those who are interested in understanding the policy process and completing internships. The partnership not only allows for collaboration between institutional leadership and scholars, but also provides CSIS young professionals and Maxwell School students with the opportunity to share their knowledge and expand their networks with each other.
