MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS, THE FIRST ANNUAL (TV)
Summary
The first annual MTV Video Music Awards Show, hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Akroyd live from New York's Radio City Music Hall. Highlights include the following: pop star Cyndi Lauper reads the awards rules in a gibberish language; hirsute Who frontman Roger Daltrey presents the Best Overall Performance award to Michael Jackson for "Thriller" -- with Diana Ross accepting the award for the absent pop star; Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones presents the Best Stage Performance award to Van Halen for "Jump," with lead singer David Lee Roth accepting the award; pop duo Darryl Hall and John Oates present the Best Art Direction Award to Kevin Godley, Lol Creme and Jim Whiting for Herbie Hancock's "Rockit"; and introduce awards for Best Cinematography, to Daniel Pearl for the Police's "Every Breath You Take," Best Special Effects, to Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, and Best Editing, to Kevin Godley, Lol Creme, and R. Aiken. In other highlights, J. Geils Band vocalist Peter Wolf and prima ballerina Cynthia Gregory present the Best Choreography award to Michael Peters and Michael Jackson for "Thriller," with Peters and Ross accepting the award; Cars frontman Ric Ocasek presents the Best Group video award to ZZ Top for "Legs," with the video's director Tim Newman accepting the award. On a video clip, Mick Jagger then introduces Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland of the Police, who present the first Video Vanguard award to Richard Lester and The Beatles. Musician Herbie Hancock presents the second Video Vanguard award to androgynous popster David Bowie. Director John Landis -- who directed Jackson's epic "Thriller" video -- presents the Best Direction award to Tim Newman for ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man." Rod Stewart and Ron Wood then present a special award to Quincy Jones, who dedicates the honor to the late bandleader Count Basie. The Tubes' Fee Waybill presents the Concept Video award to Herbie Hancock for "Rockit." Billy Idol presents the Viewer's Choice award to Michael Jackson for "Thriller," accepted by director Landis and singer Diana Ross. Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes and Simon LeBon present the Best Female Video award toÊCyndi Lauper for "Girls Just Want To Have Fun." Belinda Carlisle and Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go's present the Best Male video to David Bowie for "China Girl." Accepting on behalf of the absent "Thin White Duke" is punk pioneer Iggy Pop, who had originally recorded the song in 1977. Comedians Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy present the award for the Best Video of 1984 to the Cars for "You Might Think." Live musical performances include the following: Rod Stewart sings "Infatuation"; Madonna performs "Like a Virgin"; Huey Lewis & the News perform "I Want a New Drug"; Tina Turner sings "What's Love Got To Do with It"; and ZZ Top performs "Sharp Dressed Man." The program concludes as Ray Parker, Jr., performs the theme to the film, "Ghostbusters." Commercials deleted.
