The Supreme Court named Henri Konan Bedie as Ivory Coast's new President today in a swift transition after the death of President Felix Houphouet-Boigny on Tuesday.

President Houphouet-Boigny ruled this cocoa-growing nation of 13 million people since it gained independence from France 33 years ago.

France, which has heavy investments here, sent troops to bolster its permanent garrison in Abidjan last week, but the country has remained calm, despite fears of unrest.

Mr. Bedie, 59, takes over a collapsing economy with empty Government coffers. Under the Constitution, he will serve until elections in 1995. The opposition has been calling for early elections.
