Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
About us
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

The Internet Governance Forum is an annual gathering organized by the United Nations where collaborators can discuss public policy issues related to the internet. It will take place in Kyoto, Japan, from 8-12 October. The Wikimedia Foundation will join this year's event to share the Wikimedia movement's priorities and perspectives on digital rights with allies and policymakers. We will host a workshop, run an information booth, and participate in other sessions. Wikipedia is not funded by advertising. In fact, Wikimedia projects don't charge a subscription fee or sell your personal data. Instead, the Wikimedia free knowledge mission is made possible mostly by donations from individual donors – people like you! And your donation can have an even bigger impact when it is matched by your employer. Find out if your employer will match your gift to help make knowledge accessible to all: https://w.wiki/7Qz5

Today, the United Kingdom's Online Safety Bill completed all parliamentary stages. It will soon become the UK's latest addition to a growing body of internet regulation. The Wikimedia Foundation is calling on the UK government and independent regulator to ensure the implementation of the Online Safety Bill does not harm Wikipedia and other projects that the public relies on to create and access free, reliable knowledge. In the years since the Bill was first introduced, the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia UK have warned of the threat the Bill posed to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, Wikipedia and other public interest projects were not exempted from the Bill. “It is simply inconceivable to imagine the UK without access to Wikipedia, the world's largest online knowledge repository. The Online Safety Bill's passage may be the end of a chapter, but we are determined that it will not be the end of our story in the UK,” said Rebecca MacKinnon, Vice President of Global Advocacy at the Wikimedia Foundation. The United Kingdom's Online Safety Bill is expected to become law in a matter of weeks. Without critical changes, the law will be harmful to the free knowledge movement — not just in the UK, but also globally. The Wikimedia Foundation's Vice President of Global Advocacy, Rebecca MacKinnon, explains why the bill threatens the future of vital public interest projects. ⬇️ #ForFreeKnowledge #PublicPolicy #Advocacy #Wikipedia #UnitedKingdom #UK #OnlineSafetyBill
