Biography

  • Carla Bruni, (born December 23, 1967) know now by Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, is a French-Italian singer, songwriter and former model born in Turin, Italy.

Bruni was legally born to the musically endowed concert pianist Marisa Borini and indistrialist and composer Alberto Bruni Tedeschi. On her biological father’s side she is the heiress to the fortune of the tire manufacturer CEAT. Prior to becoming a successful musician, Bruni became one of the highest-payed models of the era, however soon became resentful of the lack of creativity in the industry and only modelled at special events. Around the same time Bruni appeared in the films “Prêt-à-Porter” and “Unzipped” and had been romantically connected to the likes of Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Kevin Costner.

Carla Bruni’s move to the music world, started with the songwriter sending lyrics to Luien Clerc in 1999. The lyrics were arranged and composed into six tracks on his 2000 album “Si j’étais elle”. In 2003 Bruni released her debut album “Quelqu’un m’a dit”, produced by Louis Bertignac, the album’s delivery and style was similar to that of her idols Joni Mitchell and Serge Gainsbourg. The album became extremely popular extremely quickly in France, going on to sell over a million copies.

The singer-songwriter’s second studio album “No Promises” arrived in 2007 featuring poems by William Butler Yeats, Emily Dickinson and W.H. Auden. After marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy and becoming the first lady of France in 2007, she released her third full-length album “Comme si de rien n’était” in July 2008. The album featured all original songs bar a rendition of “You Belong to Me” – all earnings from the album were donated to charity.

Following a period of limited music releases, in 2011 she performed a cameo role in the Woody Allen film “Midnight in Paris”. Husband Sarkozy failed to be re-elected in 2012 and Bruni returned to the recording studio and released “Little French Songs” in April 2013.

Live reviews

  • Carla Bruni

This French-Italian songstress may be most well known for her marriage to former President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, but this Political celebrity status in no way takes away from the charm of her live performance! Usually playing a simplistic set; with Carla centre stage (naturally,) a small ensemble of classical string instruments and acoustic guitars in tow, her deliverance is low key and yet utterly compelling. The accompanying string instruments complement and add layers to her unadulterated rhythmic guitar and simultaneously refrain from overpowering her gentle vocals: the sweetness and silky quality of which is reminiscent of jazz singers and yet lends itself wonderfully to the laid-back nature of her acoustic tracks. Aside from her coyly confident attitude on stage, the highlights of her sets include songs such as the cheekily upbeat sounding, “le plus beau du quartier,” the more sombre “Chanson triste” and, of course, the most popular of all her songs, “Quelqu’un ma dit.” Coincidently, all three songs hail from her debut album, ‘Quelqu’un ma dit;’ arguably the best of her total four albums due to its subtlety, delicacy and sincerity. With the title track featuring on Marc Webb’s 2009 modern day cult film, ‘(500) Days of Summer,’ it’s obvious which song the audience anticipates with every show. Overall, Carla live is poised and endearing and above all, she provides a genuinely heart-felt show.

  • Love Carla but was so disappointed by the performance. I went for the French songs, but there was barely any. First, she was about 30 minutes late to the performance and did not even start with a French song. More than half of her songs were done in English that I could have heard anywhere. This has been one of my most disappointing concerts.
