Live reviews

  • At a time when rock music was still fairly new, there were so many bands creating new sounds that hadn't been heard before. In the 1960s, artists like The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix were gods among men. MC5, although not as popular as their contemporaries, were carving their own path as well. Although the band did not release a ton of material, what they did record became instantly classic.

These days, their songs are covered by many hard rock groups. In their prime, MC5 had a very punk rock attitude not only in their music, but at their live events as well. They didn't just play their songs. This was performance art. Whenever they played at a college campus, the audience just stood there, watching as the band played with such energy that can only be described as similar to Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar during Woodstock in 1969. During their first incarnation, vocalist Rob Tyner would sing and dance at the same time, getting crazy whenever guitarists Wayne Kramer or Fred Smith played a solo. The guitarists did cool stunts too, like playing with the guitars behind their head. It is an unbelievable experience.

Although MC5 doesn't play live anymore, their music lives on in record form.

  • Wayne Kramer-one of my favourite guitarists ever...and I saw him!!!!...never thought that'd happen!.Wayne had set back the clock and played, looked and acted 30 years younger. The band were amazing replacements for the gods that are no longer with us.I was lost in the wall of sound as MC50 played the whole of the MC5's Kick Out the Jams, their greatest album, one of the best albums ever, and whooped with joy as they played Looking At Your Seeds cover, and a soul classic I think called Cry for the encore. We wanted more but in these antiseptic times the 11pm curfew has to be obeyed.Kramer joked, made love to his guitar, assaulting our ears, and had time to give us a bit of politics..basically Resist!...good to hear as I always thought of the MC5 as revolutionary.I saw a legend and he surpassed my expectations-well,it Has been a long time!MC5....LEGENDS!...AND I WAS THERE!

  • This was more awesome that I even imagined! Super group of rock icons, past and present! Must see show! Man or Astro-Man? was the perfect opening act!

Zen Guerilla's Marcus Durant on vocals, Faith No More bassist Billy Gould, Fugazi's Brendan Canty on drums and Soundgardens Kim Thayil on Guitars as well as Wayne Kramer!
