Ireland considers that it is a matter of urgency that the long arrow characters proposed in N2336 be encoded in ISO/IEC 10646. These characters have been recognized by the mathematical community as being common enough to warrant inclusion in the ISOAMSA standard entity set. They have a different semantics to the shorter arrows in addition to being stylistically different.

 

The MathML standard is to be completely mapped to this entity set, as it is intended to be a superset of it. This mapping cannot be achieved until the long arrows have been encoded in ISO/IEC 10646.
