First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Derivative Work[edit]

Hi, you've marked a number of the images that I've uploaded onto Houben R.T.'s page as derivative work. Could you please explain why you've done this? These are Houben's paintings; how are they derivative? cdg2118 14:30, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've changed the scope to suit what the image displays and just wondering whether you may support it or not. Bidgee 20:03, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VI and sounds[edit]

I've edited the criteria to remove that arbitrary exclusion - why should they be excluded? VI could handle them fine, if it weren't for those two words. Adam Cuerden (talk) 07:17, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MER-C!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 22:00, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removing images from the list[edit]

Hello, I have looked, that you removed all images with tables of voting results from the list of FP candidates. I could be OK, but before this it is neccesary to do many other things, which are listed in instructions: Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished. --Karel (talk) 10:39, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that stuff had already been done. Perhaps you should yell at the people who close the things as they just leave them there unarchived and not dealt with, some more than a week. (This almost never happens at en, the closer is expected to do the work immediately after closure.) I've put them back because I know from my experience at WP:FPC doing more than three concurrent promotions manually is really annoying, so much so that I wrote a program to do the drudge work for me. MER-C 13:38, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As you see, the procedure especially for featured pictures is relative complicated and time consuming. When I manipulate with candidates for FP, I always leave removing from list as last step. Now it looks good and I try do something with this, but sometimes on evening, now I have no enough time to play with. --Karel (talk) 14:25, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 05:17, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging copyvios[edit]

Hi, When tagging copyright violations, please inform the uploader. This is best done using the gagdet. See in your preferences to enable them, tab "Gadget", section "Maintenance tools" : "AjaxQuickDelete" and "Quick delete". These add links in the left column (or right column for Hebrew, Arabic, etc., language interface). Regards, Yann (talk) 09:35, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

FP Promotion[edit]

75px|center| This image has been promoted to Featured picture!

The image Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Heinrich Berann NPS Panoramas, that you nominated on Commons:Featured picture candidates/Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Heinrich Berann NPS Panoramas has been promoted. Thank you for your contribution. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so.

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder[edit]

Hi MER-C. I noticed that you've made malformed deletion requests. Here, {{Delete}} is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. Also, we don't subst it. When you want to delete a page by manually using the {{Delete}} template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar per COM:DR#Starting requests), you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:25, 26 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

smart ukrainians[edit]

Hi, I would like to make a request to check users that seems to be Wikibusiness socckpuppets. They have one file uploaded in their history and free license in metadata, another remarkable coincidence is that files portray Ukrainian business people. Here is the preliminary List. Is this worth trying, and should I make request on Commons? Anntinomy (talk) 22:16, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're onto something - they're all socks. I recommend having all of them checked if they are not stale, as well as the additional accounts.

"Petrushchak ivan" is possibly a spammer - 11000 edits on uk.wp, but two clear Wikibusines articles on en.wp (Viktoriya Valentynivna Podhorna, Intergal-Bud). MER-C 18:47, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thanks . By the way we've got G5 implemented in ukwiki! will see how it works on some of those Anntinomy (talk) 22:13, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MER-C tell again please should I put the files list here? Or are you processing this? Anntinomy (talk) 12:16, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And two more uploaders seem to be spammers
File:Соломон Амар.jpg (businessman with lack of notability)
File:Andriy Yakovyna.jpg (businessman with lack of notability)
File:Vladyslav Savchenko.jpg (ukr buisnesman, ukarticle edited by blocked IgorTurzh and also article in simple wiki)
File:Андрій Матюха.jpg (Favbet founder, article in ukwiki with disclosed paid editing)
Anntinomy (talk) 17:01, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please do. I have yet to look at these two files. MER-C 18:43, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, nominated, but spammers/uploaders are not blocked yet. Shouldn't they be blocked before the nomination? Anntinomy (talk) 20:16, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Spammers

I've listed the spammers on m:SRG. I don't know how long it will take to get actioned, it is heavily backlogged (same with en.wp SPI). MER-C 16:45, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No reaction on the nomination page by now. Couple more suspects

--Anntinomy (talk) 17:07, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File:Lidiia Bilas.jpg and File:Лідія Білас.jpg are spam without their respective articles being spam. The Agiliway logo is also spam, as is pl:Agiliway. Spammers: Żółty nastrój, Alisher Apple, Olga Malozhvanets. Mer Mycket is probably a spammer. MER-C 15:47, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

seems to be from spammer also File:Зубик Володимир.jpg --Anntinomy (talk) 19:21, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's them. Existing spam on en.wp and created spam on ru.wp. Spammers: Куман Рос, Рудиченко. MER-C 17:52, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Affected:
