Add a search option "in any language" to the multi-lingual search on www.wikipedia.org
Open, LowPublicFeature

Description

Currently we offer no search in Wikipedia that returns search results in any language. www.wikipedia.org is our international entry page and this page would be the ideal place to add a search option "in any language".

Implementation idea: Such a search could be simply implemented by using Google to do a full text search on the domain wikipedia.org. For example, this would be the result of a search for "Enterobius vermicularis": https://www.google.de/?gws_rd=ssl#safe=off&q=%22Enterobius+vermicularis%22+site:wikipedia.org (If we can implement such a search without Google, then all the better.)

Thanks for taking the time to report this!

How is this task different from T26767 ? (Also note that by default we do not rely on 3rd party services such as Google.)

https://www.wikipedia.org/ has a search input field and a drop-down list for the language, from Arabic to Chinese.
T26767 is a request to add an option to display two (or more) search boxes instead of the one. A user who often searches in English and Norwegian made this proposition. This suggestion is not a search in any language.

T104984 is a request to add an option "in any language" to the language selector so that it is possible to search in any language with one search.

This is currently not technically possible for performance reasons; the backend couldn't handle querying all the search indices simultaneously. Marking as stalled.

This is currently not technically possible for performance reasons; the backend couldn't handle querying all the search indices simultaneously. Marking as stalled.

Is there a task dedicated to fixing these performance reasons which should be a subtask of this task?
Asking as task should not be stalled forever (and ignored and forgotten).

(Smallprint, as general orientation for task management:
If you wanted to express that nobody is currently working on this task, then the assignee should be removed and/or priority could be lowered instead.
If work on this task is blocked by another task, then that other task should be added via Edit Related Tasks...Edit Subtasks.
If this task is stalled on an upstream project, then the Upstream tag should be added.
If this task requires info from the task reporter, then there should be instructions which info is needed.
If this task needs retesting, then the TestMe tag should be added.
If this task is out of scope and nobody should ever work on this, or nobody else managed to reproduce the situation described here, then it should have the "Declined" status.
If the task is valid but should not appear on some team's workboard, then the team project tag should be removed while the task has another active project tag.)
