Save the date! Reddit Global Meetup Day is back and we'll be joining in the celebration on Saturday, June 15th at McClatchy Park.
MOD

UPDATE 6/7

I have slightly modified the Google sheet signup. For those who are planning to attend, if you could please sign the sheet no later than Friday afternoon and state how many people will be attending that would be great. This will let me know how much food to buy the night before the meetup.

If you want to bring a shareable item to the meetup please list it on the sheet, but please know that bringing something is not required. There will be food provided. This would just be for items not already provided. If you do decide to bring something, don't worry about how much to bring and just bring whatever you are comfortable with.

UPDATE 5/31

I mentioned in the original post below that I had submitted a request for funding from Reddit and that request was approved! This meetup is now going to be powered by Reddit Community Funds! Below is what will be provided at the meetup:

  • Burgers (both real beef and Beyond burgers)

  • Hot Dogs

  • Chips

  • Cookies

  • Cake (I'm ordering a full sheet cake for the event)

  • Soda

  • Water

Buns, condiments, paper plates, napkins, plastic cutlery and cups will be provided as well.

Even though the above items will be provided, if anyone would like to bring anything else, we can still do a potluck as well. I have created a Google sheet where you can sign up for something to bring if you wish. I personally will be bringing some other types of beverages to the meetup.

I'll post more updates as we get closer to the meetup. Feel free to comment below or send me a DM if you need more information.

ORIGINAL POST - 5/15

For those of you who have been on Reddit for a while, you may remember that Reddit used to have a Global Meetup Day every year in June. They stopped doing this once the pandemic hit but it is now back for the first time since 2019. The official Reddit post about it is here. This year, they are making it Global Meetup Week and communities can celebrate any day within the week. I was able to reserve the gazebo area at McClatchy Park on June 15th, so we'll have shade the entire time.

If you search "global meetup" in r/Sacramento, you'll see threads organizing Global Meetup Day events going back over 10 years. This sub has always done something for that day. Here is my recap post from the last such event in 2019 and here is the recap post of the 2016 event. Those are the only recap posts I can find with pictures.

We had a potluck at the last 2019 event and it was wildly successful. We'll probably do the same thing here, but there will be more info on that later. If you look at the official Reddit announcement linked above, you'll see that Reddit is advertising a Community Funds program. I have submitted a request for Reddit funding to provide food and drinks (burgers, hot dogs, chips, water, soda, etc.). I'm still waiting to see if that gets approved or not before determining what kind of potluck may be necessary.

Anyway, here are the details of the event:

  • Date: Saturday, June 15th

  • Time: 12:00 - ???

  • Location: McClatchy Park (the gazebo is by the tennis courts near the corner of 33rd and Montgomery)

This post will remain a sticky for the next month and any updates to the event will be posted here. If you have any questions, feel free to DM me or ask in the comments.

Finally, for you trolls who feel the need to make shitty, sarcastic comments about the meetup, don't waste your time. Your comment will be deleted and don't be surprised if you find yourself banned.

To close budget deficit, Sacramento will start charging for on-street Sunday parking To close budget deficit, Sacramento will start charging for on-street Sunday parking

EDIT: non-paywall link: https://www.aol.com/close-budget-deficit-sacramento-start-162542382.html

TLDR:
-Parking meters on the grid will charge on Sundays AND holidays
-300 currently unmetered spots in the grid will become metered
-Other city stuff going up in price
-City is pretty broke

Anyone else run into a lady at Arden with a story about needing gas? Anyone else run into a lady at Arden with a story about needing gas?

Last night near the mall, before even getting out of my car I was approached by a woman with a story about her kids using her car and not filling it up and now she needs gas so she can go to work at her care facility. She caught me as soon as I opened my car door.

I gave her 10$, I figured if it was real and she needed gas 10$ was no skin off my nose.

However, walking up to me in my car set me up defensively. Who does that?

Honestly, it was more than likely a scam. I believe I saw the same lady once before with the same story a long time ago….

Turning across solid double yellow lines into business parking lot on Alhambra Turning across solid double yellow lines into business parking lot on Alhambra

Leaving the post office earlier this morning and witnessed law enforcement reprimanding a driver who was making a left from Alhambra into the usps parking lot telling them they can’t do that because it’s a solid double yellow line. TF? People take that left all the time to park in the lot and I am certain it’s a legal left. That’s how I’ve always done it in the 20 years I’ve lived on the grid—come up Q St, left onto Alhambra, left into parking lot. Which is exactly what I did earlier. Never an issue because as far as I recall, turning into driveways across solid lines is ok. I have a pretty solid grasp on traffic laws and have recently been helping someone study to take a drivers test because they are elderly and are required to retest before they renew their license. Have I been on autopilot all these years and overlooked something about this area in particular?

Just moved here. I love it here. Just moved here. I love it here.

Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying living in Sac. I've only been here for 6 months (I'm 41 and a dinkwad), and it's been such a nice change of pace. I'm born and raised in LA, and though LA will always be my home, I'm slowly turning into a Sacramento fanboy. The hardest part is making new friends, but I think that's always going to be an issue at this age and a new place, but in no rush. But anyway, thanks for welcoming me with open arms and I haven't even scratch the surface of things to do yet and summer is here. If you have any must-dos or tries, let me know!

EDIT: Any recommendations on good late-night (at leat mid-night) eats during the weekday that aren't a fast-food chain? It feels like everything good closes at 8-9PM in Sacramento.

Anyone have experience increasing under house ventilation? Anyone have experience increasing under house ventilation?

Exactly that. If you've had to do this would you recommend whomever you used?

Our very old house has inadequate crawl space ventilation. Engineer recommended hiring someone to do it but they don't say what kind of someone. I need to find someone that knows what they're doing and knows how to listen because there's a chance this isn't possible with our house.

Temp Agency Questions Temp Agency Questions

Are there any specific temp agencies you would recommend? I may not have a job, but won't really know until the end of the month, and I'm trying to prepare in case I don't.

I have very little work history despite my age, and a year's gap on my resumé. After applying to dozens of jobs for months, only two places have gotten back to me recently. I interviewed at both, but didn't get either.

The only option I had was to apply at Amazon since they hire immediately with no work history, resumé, or interview needed. But I only lasted three days because I couldn't handle the extreme physical labor, and requested a leave of absence for two and a half weeks.

Depending on if my doctor can get me an accommodation and the job accepts me back, able to place me somewhere I can properly function, will decide on whether or not I'm still employed.

But from what I hear, temp agencies can't guarantee you placement anywhere, and you may still have to interview and have good work history. I need somewhere that will hire without questions, that doesn't demand heavy lifting. I can't do customer service either.

It's not that I'm being picky, but have been isolated for so long and dealt with other factors that make me have zero social skills. The only options I can think of are a warehouse or factory that has roles physically disabled people can do.

I know they exist and that some places even have wheelchair users as employees. There are definitely positions out there where you're simply taping packages, putting light items on conveyer belts, etc. My Amazon facility requires everyone to lift extremely heavy items high above our heads, kneel on the hard floor repeatedly, etc. and they get upset when we're slow.

I'd also love to do computer work, and am hoping to eventually learn some kind of programming, but I have very little knowledge on that now, and don't know if there's any type of office job I can get with no experience.

I just want to afford being able to live for once. I need to get out of a bad living situation, and am desperate for money, but can't function properly like most people. The doctor may be able to help with new anxiety medication, but that won't undo years of being socially incompetent.

I also can't explain to possible employers that I've been mentally unwell, and that's why I've barely worked in my nearly 30 years of living. There's no way to make my resumé look good. I haven't been going to school, doing volunteer work, etc. and won't lie about that.

Am I screwed or is there some place that can help me get a job quickly?
